About the stone hatch
Stone is the one material with no single drawing convention. A rubble wall, a dressed ashlar facade, a ledge stone cladding panel and a cobble paving field are all correctly called stone, and each one is drawn differently. A single fixed pattern can only ever be right for one of them.
This generator therefore treats stone as a family of styles. Fieldstone builds an irregular mosaic of closed stones with a readable mix of large, medium and small pieces. Ashlar sets dressed blocks into regular courses with staggered head joints. Ledge stone stacks long, shallow pieces into layers. River rock and cobblestone pack rounded stones, loosely for a river bed and tightly for paving.
Every style is generated deterministically from its sliders and a seed, so the same settings always produce the same stones and the same PAT text. Pick a style, adjust the stones, set the pattern size to your drawing scale and export the file for AutoCAD or import it as a Revit fill pattern.
How to use the PAT file
- Download the .PAT file, or copy the definition into your own pattern library file.
- AutoCAD: place the file in a support path, then choose Hatch, Pattern type Custom and pick the pattern name.
- Revit: Manage, Additional Settings, Fill Patterns, New, Custom, then import the .PAT file and set the import scale.
- Metric patterns assume millimetre drawing units; imperial patterns assume inches.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a stone hatch?
- A stone hatch is the drawing convention used to fill masonry or paving built from natural stone. Unlike brick it has no fixed module, so the pattern shows irregular stones, dressed courses or packed rounded stones depending on the type of stonework being drawn.
- Which stone style should I use?
- Use fieldstone for rubble and random stone walling, ashlar for dressed and coursed stone facades, ledge stone for thin layered cladding, river rock for landscape and river bed fills, and cobblestone for stone paving in site plans.
- How do I import a stone PAT file into AutoCAD?
- Save the .PAT file into a folder listed under Options, Files, Support File Search Path, run HATCH, set the pattern type to Custom and select the stone pattern by name. Keep the hatch scale at 1 so the stones measure what the preview shows.
- Will the same seed always give the same stones?
- Yes. The generator uses a seeded deterministic algorithm, so a given style, slider set and seed always produce identical geometry and identical PAT text. Note the seed if you need to regenerate the same wall later.
- Does the stone pattern tile without seams?
- Yes. Every style is generated on a repeating tile, so the stones continue across the tile boundary with no seam and no cut off pieces when the hatch fills a large area.
