Area factors are the square of length factors
One foot is 0.3048 m, so one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². A five percent error in a length conversion becomes roughly ten percent in area, which is why area should be converted from a clean length base rather than eyeballed.
Hectares and acres
A hectare is exactly 10,000 m², a tidy metric block of 100 m by 100 m. An acre is 4,046.8564224 m², a historical measure with no round metric equivalent, so acre figures almost always carry decimals once converted.
